Two of the Lions latest hires could lead to more deep shots from Jared Goff in 2025, here's why

The Detroit Lions have not typically had Jared Goff load up and throw deep in the past few years. However, in 2024, he had 48 deep passes (passes of 20 or more yards) and generally had success with them. He completed 41.7% of those passes, which was 11th best in the league.  While we've deduced […]

The Detroit Lions have not typically had Jared Goff load up and throw deep in the past few years. However, in 2024, he had 48 deep passes (passes of 20 or more yards) and generally had success with them. He completed 41.7% of those passes, which was 11th best in the league.

While we've deduced that the Lions are going to continue to be a very run-reliant team, two of their latest coaching hires really show that we could see a lot more deep shots coming from Jared Goff in 2025.

First off there's John Morton. While Morton wasn't the OC in Denver, he's coming for an offense that dialed up the second-most deep pass attempts in the league with Bo Nix in 2024. He threw 77 passes for 20 or more yards.

Goff has an arm too and he has a real field stretcher in Jameson Williams. It's time to start targeting him downfield more and Morton should be able to see that.

The other guy is Bruce Gradkowski. We don't quite know what his role on offense will be, but we do know that the Lions coaching staff is pretty open to contributions from all coaches. We also know that when Gradkowski was the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Battlehawks, he often took deep shots. He had AJ McCarron throw deep 34 times in 10 games last spring.

We're going to see what the Lions do on offense soon enough, but look for this team to start utilizing the deep threat a little more in place of some of the trick plays that they were doing under Johnson. Chunk plays are going to be the name of the game in Detroit.
