In case you didn't know, new Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters was part of the San Francisco 49ers front office that found seventh-round sensation, Brock Purdy.
So, naturally, the Commanders are hoping Peters' insight travels cross-country to Washington, where the franchise, itself, should draft what it hopes to be a Pro Bowl-caliber QB for the next decade-plus.
But, with a defensive-minded head coach leading the way in Dan Quinn, could the Commanders forgo the most important position in the sport?
It's highly unlikely, but anything is possible in the NFL. Still, at the same time, Peters basically said the Commanders are drafting a QB during his response to a question about Purdy.
"He always composed. He was always, like he is now, he's the same guy every day," Peters told reporters at the 2024 NFL Combine. "And really, his tape was what really turned us on and then you meet the person, but this is only just a little bit part of the process. But his tape and everything that he did at Iowa State, and how well he played, and how well he played the position – we really thought that he could fit in well with our scheme. If we thought he was that good, we probably wouldn't have waited till the last pick, but no, we liked him that much.
"Now, I gotta find a new quarterback."
Interviews and medicals outweigh results from workouts
"The two biggest things are the medical portion, which I'm not a part of that I just see it all the results, and then the interviews," said Peters. "We're going to interview a lot of quarterbacks, as well as a lot of other players here. So that's really the first touch point that we'll have with these guys..
"… In scouting, you make mistakes more so on the person than the actual talent. I think we're all here for a reason, in terms of being talent evaluators, but understanding what makes that person tick and how they'll fit in your locker room and your particular culture is the biggest thing where you can make mistakes on."
The players know this is important, too. It's why guys who won't test, like Caleb Williams and Marvin Harrison Jr., still show up and speak with teams and media. It's also a big reason why Jalen Carter came back to Indy after leaving the Combine to answer two arrest warrants.
So, if Drake Maye or Michael Penix Jr. don't test well, don't rule them out of the Commanders' plans. Especially when considering Purdy tested so poorly.
Peters didn't outright say the Commanders are taking a QB at No. 2, but it's pretty much a foregone conclusion, at this point. It doesn't make much sense to wait and take a guy later in Round 2 when you almost have the pick of the entire litter at your disposal. And even if Caleb Williams goes first, guys like Maye and Jayden Daniels are excellent consolation prizes.
