The Washington Commanders are returning to practice as they get ready for the Monday night showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs, and they need to get back to full health.

The team already ruled out quarterback Jayden Daniels with his hamstring injury, so veteran Marcus Mariota will make his third start of the season. He needs help, though, to beat Patrick Mahomes on the road in primetime, and it sounds like he’s getting his top two weapons back this week.

The offense has played as a full team only twice this season, and Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel are on track to return this week.

Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel are back to practice

It will take a full team effort to beat the Chiefs, and the good news came early as McLaurin and Samuel were back at practice on Thursday as full participants.

McLaurin hasn’t played since he got injured in the win against the Las Vegas Raiders when he stretched out for a touchdown. Samuel only missed last week, but he’s been dealing with his lingering bruised heel for a few weeks now. Mariota was the quarterback when McLaurin caught his only deep pass this season, so we know that the two will have a connection on Monday night, and he’s not afraid to let it rip deep.

Samuel has also been a key piece on offense with McLaurin back, and the two help each other when they’re both healthy and on the field together. We saw McLaurin return to practice last week, however, and he missed the last two practices and the game against the Cowboys, which he was supposed to return for.

McLaurin and Samuel are dealing with weird injuries that can linger longer than you want them to, so their game status will be unknown until we get into the weekend.

Commanders’ wide receiver group has struggled

Getting McLaurin and Samuel back on Monday night would be huge after seeing how bad the starting lineup was against the Cowboys last week. Chris Moore, Luke McCaffrey, Jaylin Lane, and Robbie Chosen, who just joined the team, are a less-than-ideal lineup to have against anyone. The Chiefs’ passing defense is the fourth-best in the league, and they only allow 174 yards through the air per game.

We are still days away from knowing whether McLaurin and Samuel will play, but getting them back would be a major boost for Mariota, who is trying to shock the world and save the season.
