The Commanders are taking a chance on a former first-round pick in hopes of saving them from massive offseason mistake
The Commanders are hoping to get the full potential out of this player.
The season hasn’t gone as a lot of people have hoped for the Washington Commanders, and that includes fans and players.
Injuries have been a major storyline for many teams around the league this season, and the Commanders are in that conversation with Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin, both missing multiple games through the first six weeks. You can never predict injuries, but the writing was on the wall for one player who can’t stay healthy, but the Commanders decided to bring him back anyway.
Noah Brown was expected to be the WR3 on the offense in 2025, but instead, he’s on the IR, and the Commanders’ wide receiver room looks extremely thin. The Commanders have brought in former first-round pick Treylon Burks in hopes of him reaching his potential and filling in for Brown, who has no timetable for his return.
Commanders sign Treylon Burks
The Commanders hosted wide receiver Treylon Burks on Wednesday for a visit, and they’ve officially signed him to the practice squad, with the expectations of elevating him quickly, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
McLaurin, Brown, and even Deebo Samuel all have injuries that they’re dealing with, and the Commanders need help now more than ever. Even if they elevate him soon with the open roster spot that Brown’s IR designation created, you have to imagine that it will take a week or two for him to get going on the offense and up to football speed.
Luckily for the team, Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane have shown leaps in their development lately and have shown they can handle more. It’s still too much to ask with the gauntlet of a schedule coming up for the Commanders, and they need more help now, and also for the future as well.
Can Treylon Burks be a huge hit?
Things clearly didn’t work well for Burks out in Tennessee when he was drafted 18th overall by the Titans, but maybe a change of scenery will help him flourish. The Titans have been a bad team, and Burks never had a real quarterback to play with, but we know Daniels can bring the best out of anyone. Burks is only 25 years old and is essentially an older free draft pick at this point.
He’s had a list of injuries himself, so hopefully he can stay healthy and not become the same type of problem Brown is currently creating on the roster with his availability issues. Regardless, this is a very low-risk move that can have a high payoff with Burks’ skillset and his 6-foot-2, and 225lbs frame if he stays healthy.
