Commanders could finally add young competition to unsettling position with NFL Draft prospect impressing at his pro day

The Washington Commanders are finally in a better place after making drastic changes to their roster in free agency, and they still have the NFL Draft to help.

There are still weaknesses on the roster to address, and the Commanders only have six picks to work with. General manager Adam Peters is doing his homework on prospects in the NFL Draft, and even some who could go undrafted and make a difference.

There’s one NFL Draft prospect that left an impression on them that could bring competition to one position they haven’t been able to figure out.

Commanders showed extensive interest in Houston Kicker Ethan Sanchez

The Commanders looked to have a solution at the kicker position after bringing back Jake Moody in free agency, who had a solid showing in Washington as a late addition. Moody could still very well be the guy for the future, but the Commanders need to bring in competition and run with the best option.

They shouldn’t spend a draft pick on a kicker since they’re very limited as it is, but signing one after the draft should be a priority. The Commanders got to watch Houston kicker Ethan Sanchez impress at his pro day, and showed a lot of interest in him.

Adding a young kicker to the mix needs to be on their to-do list, and whoever they bring will have an opportunity to win the job.

The Commanders need to figure out the kicker position

Last year, we saw the Commanders give Matt Gay the largest one-year fully guaranteed contract for a kicker, and he had an awful season, which led to a release before the season ended. The Commanders didn’t bring in any competition before or during the season, which was already a massive mistake they can’t repeat.

Moody went 10 for 11 for the Commanders, including a make from 56 yards out, and it’ll be hard to take his spot if he stays consistent. Sanchez is a Lou Groza Award Semifinalist and All-Big 12 honorable mention who made 86.2% of his kicks the last two seasons, and scored 106 points in 2025.

Moody is a cheap option on a one-year deal, and adding another young kicker in the mix could even push him more, or could show the Commanders that Sanchez can be the new sheriff in town to finally be their answer.
