The Washington Commanders were the top spenders this offseason after signing new free agents, but also extending their own key players.

General manager Adam Peters spent over $315 million in contracts this offseason, including a hefty four-year $100 million deal for EDGE Odafe Oweh, and a vital two-year, $60.2 million extension as free agency kicked off.

Even after spending as much as they did, the final numbers have been calculated on their latest signings, and the Commanders still have the second-most salary cap space.

The Commanders revamped their roster in free agency, but they also did so responsibly, with both Oweh and Tunsil having a salary cap hit under $12 million in 2026. All of their major contracts in free agency have been pushed to later years, but they also have an out at a certain point where they can get out if needed, and save a ton of money. They can also extend both players and push that major salary cap hit back even more.

Peters also played the waiting game on LG Chris Paul, who was said to have a robust free agency market with a projection around $12-$15 million per year, and the Commanders brought him back on a one-year, $3 million deal.

Peters couldn’t have had a better offseason so far, and they’re sitting in a great position with the second-most salary cap space in the NFL at roughly $49.3 million. This leaves the door open to signing more free agents during the second wave, but only for the right price.

How the Commanders can spend their remaining salary cap space

The Commanders have plenty to spend on their 2026 NFL Draft class, so they can still make moves before then. They still need to help out the WR and CB rooms, so they could sign Jauan Jennings or wait until Brandon Aiyuk is released for the right price. Finding cheap depth at CB would help set them up for the draft as well.

Ideally, the Commanders could also bring in competition for the center position behind Nick Allegretti, unless they wait until the draft. Overall, the Commanders have had an excellent offseason of getting younger while building the foundation of the roster, which has been missing. The NFL Draft class can push them over the top to compete once again.

Don’t rule out more signings for the right price, or they can roll over any salary cap space they have to next season, like they did last year.
