Commanders need to steer clear of this risky first-round NFL Draft prospect after latest news derails his value

The Commanders can’t risk taking this one prospect in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft after hearing the latest on his injuries.

The Washington Commanders have a difficult decision to make when they’re on the clock with the No. 7 overall pick, but one player should be off their board now.

After rebuilding the roster in free agency, the Commanders still have a massive void in the WR room to fill, and they should highly think about taking one in the first round this offseason. There will be a debate between Carnell Tate, Jordyn Tyson, and Makai Lemon, but they may be out on one after hearing the latest injury update on the risky prospect.

Jordyn Tyson’s hamstring injury update derails his NFL Draft value

The Commanders could take a WR with the No. 7 overall pick, and Tyson is one of the most explosive prospects this season. The bad news, however, is that he comes with a lot of risk due to his injury history, and the latest update didn’t help one bit.

NFL Draft expert Dane Brugler said on The Athletic Football Show that Tyson’s hamstring injury hasn’t gotten better throughout the draft process, and that it’s even spiked during training, and likely won’t be participating at Arizona State’s pro day.

Tyson suffered a hamstring injury on October 18th against Texas Tech, which held him out until November 22nd against Colorado. Then, he suffered another hamstring injury that was reportedly different than the first one, and it’s still lingering today, which is very concerning.

It’s been almost four months, and the hamstring injury held him out of doing anything at the NFL Scouting Combine, and now his pro day, which is pretty much his last chance to impress teams. Brugler also said that he expects Tyson to try to run routes for teams before the draft, but that won’t help much.

The Commanders can’t take Jordyn Tyson in the NFL Draft

The Commanders have to add a top WR opposite of Terry McLaurin this offseason, and they can’t afford to take a swing on a risky prospect, despite how talented Tyson is. They also only have six picks in the NFL Draft, and only two in the top-100, so wasting a first-round pick would be a backbreaker.

There’s a good chance Ohio State WR Carnell Tate will be on the board, and he should be their selection if they want a WR. Tate is also 21 years old and a savvy route runner, measuring 6-3 and 195 pounds. If they can add Tate and Brandon Aiyuk before the offseason workouts start, then the WR room will be in a much better position.

Meanwhile, we don’t know how long Tyson’s hamstring injury will linger, or whether it’ll return once he starts playing at full speed again.
