Commanders’ free agency signing looks to be low-risk move to fix glaring need after seeing actual contract details
The Commanders spent a lot of money in free agency, but they also took a smart approach to fix multiple positions on defense.
General manager Adam Peters was moving with a purpose during free agency, and the Washington Commanders came out of the week a better team.
The team still has plenty of moves to make in free agency, but the roster is finally stable for once after getting younger and faster. They did fill a lot of team needs with aggressive pushes, but also made low-risk signings as well to fill in roster holes. Contract details are starting to emerge, and one signing looks to be a key low-risk move that can really pay off.
CB Amik Robertson’s contract looks to be a low-risk signing
The Commanders needed to focus on the defense, and that’s exactly what they did by dropping a bag on EDGE Odafe Oweh, but also giving out prove-it deals. The secondary had a lot of question marks surrounding it, especially at corner after releasing Marshon Lattimore and seeing Mike Sainristil struggle.
Daronte Jones got some help in free agency after the Commanders signed CB Amik Robertson to a two-year deal. Robertson’s contract details show that it’s pretty much a one-year deal with an out if things don’t go well.
He only has a salary cap hit of $5.01 million in 2026, which doubles in 2027 with a $10.01 million cap hit. It could essentially be a one-year, $8 million deal that comes with $7 million in savings in 2027 if they moved on from him. Robertson could also become their starting nickel corner, and still come at a value of just $10 million in 2027 if he excels.
Amik Robertson is coming to Washington motivated
The Commanders needed a dog in the slot at corner, and Robertson could be the guy after seeing what he did with the Detroit Lions. Robertson is a competitive, smaller CB at 5-9, 183 pounds, but he’s been able to run with the best on the outside and in the slot. His best game was when he locked down Justin Jefferson in 2024 to just three catches for 54 yards on nine targets.
A motivated Robertson can help fix the Commanders’ secondary and also become an emergency backup plan at outside corner if they need it. The Commanders still need to explore adding a lockdown outside corner or actual depth behind Sainristil with the remaining free agents or in the NFL Draft.
Robertson was a solid signing that will either be a low-risk signing they can replace next offseason, or the missing piece the defense desperately needed in Jones’ defensive scheme.
