Kliff Kingsbury lands at very unexpected NFC contender where he’s guaranteed to succeed and revive his career
Kliff Kingsbury is joining the Los Angeles Rams with head coach Sean McVay, where he can revive his coaching career.
The Washington Commanders didn’t waste time making a drastic change when the season ended, and they decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.
They replaced Kingsbury with QB coach David Blough, who has never called plays for an offense before, so it was a bold move to make. The decision aged well over the last few weeks, however, as Kingsbury continued to strike out on coaching opportunities this offseason.
After being linked to several head coaching and offensive coordinator positions that were open, Kingsbury finally has a new home, and it’s not a place that anybody expected.
Kliff Kingsbury lands with Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams
Kingsbury was a hot name once he left Washington, but nothing came out of the multiple interviews he had. He interviewed for the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans head coach openings, then resorted to offensive coordinator interviews. His search went silent, and we waited to see where he would end up.
I think I can speak for everyone when I say that nobody expected him to land with the Los Angeles Rams, but that’s where he is headed.
ESPN’s Peter Schrager says that Kingsbury and McVay have been in communication over the last few weeks. Once the New York Giants decided to hire Matt Nagy as the offensive coordinator, for whom Kingsbury was heavily linked, the Rams were his clear destination. Kingsbury and McVay have been close for a while, and now he’s looking to boost his resume after a split with the Commanders.
Kliff Kingsbury looks to revive his career under the Sean McVay coaching tree
As we saw this offseason, the McVay coaching tree is as strong as ever, with Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur getting the Arizona Cardinals head coaching job. Nathan Scheelhaase and Chris Shula also had plenty of head coaching interest this offseason, and both could be gone next offseason.
Now, Kingsbury is hoping to do the same, even though we aren’t sure of his exact coaching title yet. He could replace LaFleur as the offensive coordinator or take a lesser role under whoever the Rams hire. Just spending a year with McVay on offense will help him rebound and maybe take over on the coaching staff next season if there’s an opening. Quarterback Matt Stafford already said he will be back next season, and Kingsbury will have plenty of talent to work with.
