There’s one must-see matchup to watch with a Commanders recent draft pick going against a familiar face in his first start
All eyes will be on these two rookies in the trenches.
It’s finally time to see some football with the Washington Commanders kicking off the season against NFC East rivals the New York Giants. As we all know, there’s always the matchups within the matchup that heavily influence the results of the game, and one is a can’t-miss battle.
Adam Peters invested a lot of draft capital in the offensive line, and it’s well worth it to protect the franchise quarterback, Jayden Daniels. One of those draft picks will have to face a recent opponent in his first start in the NFL.
First-round draft pick Josh Conerly Jr. will get his first start at right tackle, according to the unofficial depth chart the team released on Tuesday night, and he will likely see a lot of Abdul Carter once again.
The rematch between Conerly Jr. and Carter
Conerly Jr. played left tackle at Oregon, and he had to face off against Carter in the Big Ten Championship game with Penn State coming for the title. Carter had an insane final season that got him drafted as the 3rd overall pick by the Giants, and he finished with 66 pressures and 13 sacks.
None of those pressure and sacks came against Conerly Jr, though. Conerly Jr. faced the best and showed why he was worthy of a first-round pick as well. If you want to see a flawless performance, put on the tape. Conerly Jr. didn’t allow a single sack, hit, hurry, or pressure in that entire game. Zero.
Welcome to the league
There’s no ramp-up period for Conerly Jr, and if you look at the Commanders’ schedule, it’ll be an insane test for him to start his NFL career. Starting against a familiar foe in Carter might actually help him get his feet wet, because after that, he will see Micah Parsons or Rashan Gary on the road on a short week against the Green Bay Packers, and then Maxx Crosby.
That’s a tough way to start your career, but it also gives him a load of in-game experience that he couldn’t get against a lower tier of competition. That kind of experience will go a long way later on in the season, but also for his future development. He had a decent amount of snaps in the preseason to get those first nerves out, and he looked impressive as expected.
There are plenty of key matchups for the Commanders and Giants game to watch, but the Conerly Jr. and Carter battle in the trenches is a must-watch, especially if it goes how it went in their previous matchup a few months ago.
