The Washington Commanders can get lucky and address these position groups with roster cuts happening around the league
The Commanders can add valuable players to these positions after roster cuts.
The roster cut deadline for the NFL is Tuesday afternoon, and there will be a ton of movement around the league. Dan Quinn spoke with the media after the Washington Commanders’ last preseason game and hinted that the team has a lot of tough decisions to make, and other moves could happen.
The Commanders can take advantage of quality roster cuts around the league. Don’t be surprised if the Commanders cut down to its initial 53-man roster comes with additions to these positions, and a lot of fans agree.
Wide Receiver
It’s no surprise that a lot of people are still worried about the wide receiver room. Terry McLaurin is close to practicing with the team, but the regular season is right around the corner, and he hasn’t been on the field in a long time. Deebo Samuel should have a huge bounce-back season if he stays healthy, but Noah Brown also has an injury he’s coming back from.
The Commanders are relying a lot on some unproven youth in the wide receiver room, and there will be plenty of options as roster cuts happen around the league. This is probably the deepest position group that will be available before the season starts. Some players had flashes during preseason, but not enough to feel good about, although the quarterbacks didn’t help.
Kicker
Kicker has been the most stressful position for Commanders fans, and the preseason didn’t help at all. The Commanders gave Matt Gay a fully guaranteed one-year contract, and they need him to step up, especially from deep, where he has struggled. We saw a lot of kickers make 60+ yard field goals in preseason, while Gay went 2 for 4 and missed both kicks from 49+ yards out.
There are a lot of close kicking competitions going on around the league, and teams will have to release quality kickers. We see it every season, and the released kicker will go to a new team and impress. The Commanders can at least add someone to push for the starting spot.
Linebacker Depth
The Commanders have one of the best linebacker duos in the league, but if someone goes down, there can be a real issue. Jordan Magee finally played in the preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens, but he missed a majority of his rookie season with injuries, and he’s already dealt with one for a good portion of training camp. The team wants to use Frankie Luvu more with rushing the passer as well, and having Magee fully healthy can help with that.
I’ve had Duke Riley making the team over Nick Bellore simply because Bellore can’t play on defense anymore. I think Kain Medrano will be good, but he needs more time. One injury can result in disaster on defense.
QB3
This might sound like an overreaction to a lot of people, but Marcus Mariota has been dealing with Achilles tendinitis for a while, and it’s been a tough rehab. Right now, I don’t think he could play at the start of the season, which you pray he wouldn’t have to anyways.
Anything can happen in the NFL, though, and we saw Mariota come in multiple times last season. Many teams around the league had to play multiple quarterbacks last year, including the Philadelphia Eagles. Having a QB3 that can develop into a quality backup can go a long way with Mariiota getting older.
The Commanders will have a lot of options to build out depth in a lot of positions before the season, and we will be keeping an eye on which players become available.
