The Washington Commanders are officially moving on from Ron Rivera, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday he's being fired.
The news should come as no surprise to the NFL world after a 38-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18.
Rivera's tenure comes to an end with a 26-49-1 record since he took over the team in 2020. During that time, the best record in a single season was 8-8 in 2022.
Not every failure can be blamed on Rivera, as he took over a Commanders with toxic ownership before Dan Snyder sold the franchise. He never had a quality starting quarterback in a division featuring Dak Prescott and Jalen Hurts and he battled skin cancer.
Now the Commanders are left thinking about the future. The franchise holds the second overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, which means they could likely find their quarterback for years to come after a brief stint with the up-and-down Sam Howell.
Offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy has been a head coaching candidate for years now and he could very well be a candidate but expect this cycle to be absolutely loaded and the Commanders to go through their due diligence.
Commanders are hiring former Golden State Warriors' Bob Myers
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Commanders are hiring Myers to "help run their franchise."
Myers is known for building the Golden State Warriors dynasty that won four NBA championships, earning two Executive of the Year awards in that span. Most recently, Myers worked in TV with ESPN as an analyst.
"In speaking with Josh (Harris) and his team, it's clear they will do everything it takes to build a world-class organization – one that can win on the field and make a positive mark in the DMV community," Myers said through an official statement. "This is the type of opportunity that really inspires me, and I look forward to contributing to the next chapter of this storied franchise."
Specifically, Myers will be part of an advisory committee designed to reshape the Commanders' front office and coaching staff, per ESPN. He'll be joined by ex-Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman in such search.
Although it's a non-traditional decision to bring in a basketball guy into the NFL, fans should absolutely appreciate a different way of doing things. Myers know what a championship-caliber organization looks like in sports and he'll nudge the Commanders in the right direction to do so. It's a savvy move from the new ownership group.
