Every year, the NFL sees an influx of new head coaches and assistants. There are always many opportunities and space for changes.
So, let's analyze 25 names that potentially will be talked about over the next months.
The list has offensive- and defensive-minded coaches, special teams coordinators, position coaches, and college head coaches.
Offensive-minded coaches
Ben Johnson, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator
Johnson is the hottest name on the market. With experience for the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions, he's been an offensive coordinator since last season and became one of the brightest minds in football. He chose to stay in Detroit despite generating head coaching interest in the past cycle, but it probably won't be the case again in 2024.
Kellen Moore, Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator
Moore left Dallas to be the OC under a defensive-minded HC in Los Angeles, and he's elevated the Chargers offense, which is fifth in DVOA. He would be an option for the Chargers themselves if they want to part ways with Brandon Staley.
Eric Bieniemy, Washington Commanders assistant head coach/offensive coordinator
The Commanders are 20th in offensive DVOA, so his first job as a chief of the offense hasn't been great. But Bieniemy operates with a clear lack of talent, and he's shown in his time with the Kansas City Chiefs that he can be a strong leader.
Drew Petzing, Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator
Everyone expected the Cardinals to be the worst team in the league, especially without Kyler Murray. But they are a respectable team, and 10th in offensive DVOA. Petzing, a former Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns assistant, is in his first year as a coordinator and has impressed.
Ken Dorsey, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator
Dorsey is blamed when the Bills are bad, and doesn't receive enough credit when they are good. But they are third in offensive DVOA, and haven't gotten worse since Brian Daboll left to be the New York Giants head coach.
Frank Smith, Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator
A historic unit always deserves attention, and the Dolphins offense is that. First by most metrics, it's an impressive unit. Mike McDaniel is the mastermind behind it, but Smith is an important piece of the structure, especially in terms of running back and blocking schemes.
Bobby Slowik, Houston Texans offensive coordinator
He comes from the illustrious Kyle Shanahan offensive tree and has had a really successful start under DeMeco Ryans and coaching CJ Stroud in Houston. He's a progressive mind and worked at PFF before becoming a coach.
Shane Waldron, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator
A former Sean McVay assistant in Los Angeles, he's taken the Seattle Seahawks offense to another level. And it was a level high enough to make the team be better with Geno Smith than it was with Russell Wilson.
Dave Canales, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator
Talking about Geno Smith, Canales was his QB coach in 2022. The good results made him go to the Bucs as OC and, while the offense in Tampa is average, it's better than expected with Baker Mayfield.
Defensive-minded coaches
Mike Macdonald, Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator
A 36-year-old coach, Macdonald is a brilliant young mind and has taken the Ravens defense to a higher level. They are second in defensive DVOA, just behind the Cleveland Browns.
Ejiro Evero, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator

Evero did a great job with the Denver Broncos last year. The results aren't so good with the Carolina Panthers this year, but that's much more related to the lack of talent. Scheme-wise, he's a bright mind.
Dan Quinn, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator
Quinn already has head coaching experience with the Atlanta Falcons. He's in his third season as the Cowboys DC, and the job couldn't be better. Through this time, he's been able to adapt and evolve as a coach.
Lou Anarumo, Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator
The Bengals defense declined this year after losing important pieces, such as Jessie Bates. But Anarumo is a respected coach and was a finalist for the Cardinals HC job last offseason.
Raheem Morris, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator
Morris had an unsuccessful stint as the Buccaneers head coach, but it was a long time ago and he was so young — he was hired at 33. Now at 47, he's much more experienced and has learned a lot, with multiple opportunities on both sides of the ball.
Steve Wilks, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator
Wilks had a one year, tumultuous stint with the Cardinals in 2018. Josh Rosen was the quarterback, and they had a 3-13 season. Last year, he became the interim head coach for the Panthers after Matt Rhule's firing, and they were 6-6 even when the idea of a rebuild was clear. Now, he's leading a top 10 defense with the 49ers.
Jerod Mayo, New England Patriots linebackers coach
Mayo is seen by many as the natural Bill Belichick successor in New England since Josh McDaniels left to be the Raiders head coach.
Jim Schwartz, Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator
Schwartz had a bad stint as the Lions head coach between 2009 and 2013, but the situation wasn't great — he was hired right after the team went 0-16 in 2008. Since then, he's had impressive results as DC for the Eagles and Browns. The problem: he's already 57.
Brian Flores, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator
Flores' firing in Miami was surprising at first, to a point where it's a legal issue now. He went to the Steelers as a linebackers coach and assistant head coach last year, and now is making what he can with a talent-deficient Vikings defense.
Special teamers
Dave Toub, Kansas City Chiefs assistant head coach/special teams coordinator
Every year, Toub is seen as a potential outside-the-box hire. And if Joe Judge was hired from the special teams side, Toub can too. He's the special teams coordinator in KC since 2013, and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2018.
Rich Bisaccia, Green Bay Packers assistant head coach/special teams coordinator
Bisaccia leads a below average special teams unit in Green Bay, but he did a great job as the Raiders interim coach in 2021, leading them to the playoffs after Jon Gruden's firing. Last year, he interviewed twice with the Colts.
