As we've talked about, the Green Bay Packers can win this week despite being on a bye. The Packers are 5-8, currently third in the NFC North and 11th place in the NFC. 2.5 games behind the wildcard spot.

However, the NFC playoff race is so close at the moment, the Packers will have a lot to root for.

This weekend, there are four games that factor into the Packers current standing and how it helps moving forward:

  1. Minnesota Vikings beat the Detroit Lions: Packers fans need to face facts. They're not going to win the NFC North. A Vikings win gives them the division, but more importantly it moves the suddenly hot Lions behind Green Bay in the standings. It will be hard, but Packers fans will need to cheer for the Purple People Eaters.
  2. Philadelphia Eagles beat the New York Giants: If not for the second half collapse in London, this wouldn't be as big of an issue. The Eagles real competition for the NFC East is likely coming by way of the Dallas Cowboys. So, it's better that the freefalling Giants (1-3-1 in their last five games) be taken care of on their current trajectory.
  3. Seattle Seahawks beat the Carolina Panthers: The Seahawks have the better record, so at first this wouldn't make sense. However, a Carolina win would have them with the same record as Green Bay. But would also have them higher in the standings due to conference and divisional records. It's better that Carolina is not another factor in an already full race and the Seattle secure one of the wild card spots that is likely to fall their way anyway.
  4. New England Patriots beat the Arizona Cardinals: The more teams eliminated the better it is for the Green Bay Packers. Sending the Cardinals to 4-9 wouldn't eliminate them officially but it would make them a full game behind the Packers. Giving Green Bay some breathing room for a spot.

Unfortunately, both the Washington Commanders and Atlanta Falcons are on bye week. So they, like the Green Bay Packers won't be able to move up the standings through victory, but can be aided by plenty of losses.

If these were to all happen for the Packers, they would have a lot more room to rise and stay steady in a close wild card battle.
