The Chicago Bears have made a much needed move to the active roster on Wednesday.
The team announced that they have signed cornerback Joejuan Williams to the 53-man roster. Williams was previously on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad to start the season.
The former New England Patriots' second-round selection in 2019 will help provide some necessary depth for the Bears secondary which as been ravaged by injuries during the first three weeks of the season.
In Week 3's loss to the Chiefs, the Bears suffered even more major losses with cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson, Josh Blackwell all experiencing injuries during the game.
The unit was already without safety Eddie Jackson, who suffered a foot injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and starting cornerback Kyler Gordon, who the team already placed on injured reserve earlier this season.
Williams appeared in 12 games for the Patriots last season, recording career-highs in pass deflections (5) and total tackles (21), according to Pro Football Reference.
Pro Football Focus gave Williams a 77.4 coverage grade and 73.2 overall grade during the 2023 preseason with the Vikings. The cornerback did not allow a single completion on four targets and held opposing quarterbacks to a 39.6 passer rating.
The Bears defense has allowed the third-most passing yards, second-most passing yards per attempt, and third-most passing touchdowns through three games this season. Williams won't be a surefire cure for the team's defensive struggles, but he will certainly be a much needed upgrade over what they currently have.
Bears have a great opportunity ahead vs Broncos
