It’s a fascinating idea.

It wasn’t a great day for former Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson on Tuesday, as the Indianapolis Colts chose to name Daniel Jones the starting quarterback for the 2025 season. It was a brutal blow for the former fourth overall pick from the 2023 NFL Draft.

There are a lot of reasons why Richardson wasn’t named the starting quarterback. You can look at and point to a number of different factors from the Colts’ development plan to Richardson’s lack of development and everything in between. The reality is that everything went wrong, and it led us to where we are today.

A position change could be beneficial for Anthony Richardson

There are going to be many out there who believe that Richardson is done because he lost the starting job in his third year. Yeah, it’s pretty frustrating from every angle, and the Colts still have hope that he can be a quality starting quarterback in the National Football League.

If things don’t work out for Richardson at quarterback, there are other options for him moving forward. One of those is what former Gators quarterback Tim Tebow tried to do a few years back with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Now, it didn’t end up working for Tebow, but he isn’t quite the athlete that Richardson is. At quarterback, there isn’t a single quarterback who is more athletic since the NFL Scouting Combine became a thing in 1989.

The things Richardson can do at his size is truly absurd. The explosiveness is something the league has never seen. It raises the question if he could be great at another position.

It would be a tough one to make, but making the switch to tight end could end up working. He has the size and athletic profile that will translate at the position. In fact, Richardson’s RAS for a tight end would be in the 98th percentile at 9.84. That could work.

We’ve seen other quarterbacks make the transition as well. Logan Thomas is another former hyper-athletic, big armed quarterback who made the switch. His career ended up being pretty solid, and he was a difference maker for the Washington Commanders.

If things don’t work out for Richardson at quarterback, there is another option. I think he’s going to keep getting opportunities to play quarterback, as he’s got a lot of talent.
