The Florida Gators are still in the midst of their search for a new head coach after firing Billy Napier after the homecoming game 23-21 win over Mississippi State in October. It’s been the focus of the entire college football world, as their top target is Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin.

The critical date of Saturday, November 29th is coming up, as we will know Kiffin’s decision on that date, which is one day after the Egg Bowl. The Gators are working on potential options if Kiffin chooses to coach elsewhere after the season, but they are flying off the board quickly.

Florida Gators no longer have Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz as a head coach candidate

We learned on Tuesday that USC Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley would not be a candidate for the job based on what he told the media. He was more of a backup plan for the Gators, as he feels somewhat like Kiffin, but doesn’t have all of the positives that he brings.

Thanksgiving morning had one other coaching candidate come off the board in Missouri Tigers’ Eli Drinkwitz agreed to an extension that will pay him an extra $10.7 million and give him a bigger coaches pool to work with.

While he appeared on many lists for the Gators’ head coaching job, it never felt like Drinkwitz was a serious candidate for the position. He has done a lot of good things for the Tigers in his tenure, but he doesn’t feel like a coach who would elevate a program to the next level, which is exactly what the Gators need right now.

It feels like Missouri is the perfect spot for Drinkwitz, but this is another coaching candidate who comes off the board for the Gators, which in itself is frustrating. It’s one of the difficult aspects about so many jobs coming open during the season, as coaches have a chance to negotiate extensions before they can officially accept open jobs.

As things sit, it’s all about Kiffin, but they haven’t been sitting idly by and waiting for him to make a decision. Saturday, November 29th can’t come soon enough.
