Are the Florida Gators getting back to being in the DBU conversation again? They made a statement on Saturday night during their Junior Day recruiting event, as head coach Jon Sumrall landed a commitment in the 2027 recruiting class in four-star cornerback Amare Nugent.

This is the first commitment for Sumrall in the 2027 recruiting class after landing nearly 30 players via the transfer portal. They had landed four-star athlete Tramond Collins over the summer, but he rescinded his commitment after the firing of head coach Billy Napier.

Cornerback is a position the Gators need to work on building up in the high school ranks. The additions they made in the transfer portal were about adding depth for 2026, and the future of the position is still very much in doubt.

They have Dijon Johnson and Cormani McClain as the projected starters on the outside with incoming four-stars C.J. Hester and C.J. Bronaugh coming in with the incoming class. The 2027 class will likely have multiple cornerbacks, and Nugent is a good start.

The Gators landed Nugent, who is a four-star recruit and the 104th overall player per 247 Sports. The big win for Sumrall is getting him over the Georgia Bulldogs. The American Heritage product out of Plantation, Florida, Nugent is a 6-0, 170 cornerback who is the ninth-ranked player in the state of Florida and the 13th-ranked cornerback in the country.

He was one of the many players who attended the Junior Day recruiting event on campus, and was complimentary of the coaching staff.

“The highlight was meeting Jon Sumrall and speaking to him,” Nugent told Gators Online. “He’s a great coach and the resume speaks for itself.”

Nugent wasn’t the only player that the Gators made waves with during the event, and he might not be the only commit, either.
