The Georgia Bulldogs wide receivers led all FBS college football teams in dropped passes back in 2024. Kirby Smart–whether he would publicly admit it or not–knew he needed to upgrade the wide receiver room, and fast, heading into 2025.

Enter, Zachariah Branch. Not only did Smart and his staff bring in a stacked true freshman group and an X receiver in Noah Thomas, but he also added one of the most explosive offensive weapons in the entire country with Branch.

For those unfamiliar, Branch was a former five star stud recruit who immediately impressed when he was with USC as a true freshman with nearly 1200 all purpose yards and five total touchdowns. Fortunately for Georgia, USC turned into a dumpster fire in 2024, leading to three of their wide receivers (Branch included) leaving. Now, Georgia’s new not so secret weapon is clearly about to be the focal point of the Bulldogs’ offensive attack all season long.

Georgia’s new WR weapon Zachariah Branch explodes for huge day against Marshall

Zachariah Branch didn’t take too long on Saturday to make his presence felt. Georgia QB Gunner Stockton’s first pass of the day went to Branch for 25 yards. And just like he often does, Branch forced multiple missed tackles on the play.

Then on the very next drive Branch took another pass for 23 more yards, converting a critical third down that set up the eventual touchdown run that would give Georgia an early 14-0 lead over Marshall.

Branch saw a few more targets that couldn’t quite connect down the stretch of the first half before making his best play of the game to kick off the 2nd half of action. As Georgia was still just up 24-0 over Marshall early in the 3rd quarter, Zachariah Branch ran out left to the flat. Stockton almost immediately found him wide open, and Branch took it to the house for a 47-yard score (as you can see in post below).

Immediately following Branch’s explosive 47-yard touchdown Georgia began working more of their backups into the game since they had extended their lead to 31-0. Branch could easily have gone off for far more production than he did, but finished the day with three catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also added three punt returns for 24 yards on the day, bringing his total all-purpose yards to 119 in the contest.

It’s clear given Branch’s heavy target load and efficient production through just over two quarters of offensive action that Georgia plans on using him as the engine for their passing attack. Fans should rejoice knowing this given his electric playmaking ability.

There was a little worry following the game with Branch given that it looked as though he had suffered a lower body injury, but fortunately coach Smart confirmed that it was just cramps. Hopefully Branch continues to stay healthy, because if he does the Georgia passing attack should have plenty of juice to take down some of the best teams they’ll face on their tough SEC slate.
