It was a long journey, but former Notre Dame All-American cornerback Benjamin Morrison finally heard his name called during the 2025 NFL Draft. He was selected with the 53rd overall selection in the second round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was a longer wait than the Morrison family wanted, but it may end up being worth the wait in the end.
Heading into the 2024 college football season, many projected Morrison to be selected inside of the first round of the draft. He has, unfortunately, been ravaged by injury over the last 12 months. That included a shoulder surgery last offseason, as well as a midseason hip injury that also required surgery. With those medical red flags, some teams were understandably scared off.
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowls and this Tampa Bay staff were not one of them. They clearly bought into the talent, and the upside still being there. In his three seasons with the Notre Dame program, Morrison was able to collect 84 total tackles, nine interceptions, and 18 pass breakups. That is especially impressive when you consider Morrison was limited to just four games this season.
From a talent perspective, there is a lot to like about Morrison. He has tremendous instincts as a cover man, possessing spatial awareness and ball skills. Morrison is sticky in coverage, and has a propensity to make a ton of plays on the football. If his play strength improves, and Morrison is able to stay healthy, he has plus starter upside for the Buccaneers.
When it comes to the Tampa Bay depth chart, the future of Jamel Dean is very much up in the air. He is the starter for now, but we will see what the next step for Dean now that Morrison is on the roster. Opposite of him, Zyon McCollum is projected to start. He is a player that Morrison should be able to push, at the very least.
