It might be the college football offseason, but it won’t last for long. You are going to blink your eyes and it is going to be time for Notre Dame spring practice to begin. While spring practice might be losing its luster, it can still serve massive importance.

This 2025 Fighting Irish team returns a ton of talent this season but there are several positions that are currently unsettled. These position battles will begin to really take shape when spring practice begins. There are several players who need huge offseasons or else they could be in danger of getting passed up on the depth chart offensively.

QB Kenny Minchey and Steve Angeli

The quarterback position is a very intriguing battle this offseason for a lot of reasons. For Angeli, who is the oldest signal caller in the room, this is his chance to finally win the starting job. If he doesn’t then he may have missed his window with both Minchey and CJ Carr being younger. If Carr wins the job, then that’s a bad sign for Minchey as well. This could be a make or break offseason for both in the grand scheme of things.

WR KK Smith

There has been some hype around Smith at times the last year, but so far he has managed to make just three receptions for 38 yards in his career. We know that Malachi Fields, Jaden Greathouse, and Jordan Faison will get a lot of targets in the offense next season. Smith is one of the next names to know but it will be interesting to see if players like Cam Williams, Micah Gilbert, and Logan Saldate can make some noise this offseason. They are the class behind him, and any of them surpassing him would be difficult to fight back from.

OG Sullivan Absher

Absher is one of the talented offensive linemen on the roster who doesn’t get talked about at all. He was listed pretty consistently in the two-deep last season and has a chance to potentially win a starting job at right guard this fall. There seems to be an assumption out there that if Charles Jagusah wins the starting left tackle spot then Anthonie Knapp will just slide right in at the vacated guard spot. Absher will need to do his best to not let that happen, or else his window could be closing quickly.
