Whether or not Drew Allar is actually going to play, Penn State was always going to take the game-time decision approach against Ohio State on Saturday.
After being called a game-time decision earlier in the week, Franklin still stuck by labeling Allar that on Wednesday. The junior quarterback still practiced fully, it appeared and looked like himself.
Franklin was always going to go this route, waiting until the last minute to fully decide on Allar’s status. It can only be a positive to the Nittany Lions if Ohio State spends their entire week having to prepare for both Allar and backup quarterback Beau Pribula. Pribula brings the dual-threat ability that Allar lacks.
On the season, Allar has taken a step forward completing 71 percent of his passes for 1,640 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions. The Ohio native is expected to be in the running to be an early-round NFL draft pick next April.
Last game out against Wisconsin, Pribula had to play the entire second half and finished 11-of-13 for 98 yards and a touchdown. Pribula took off six times for 28 yards and his running ability is something that Penn State could turn to even if Allar is healthy. Pribula has more than one carry in six games this season for Penn State.
At this level, the element of surprise should not catch the Buckeyes off guard. Since Franklin said that Allar will be a game-time decision, Ohio State will have to prepare for both quarterbacks. The Ohio State coaching staff said earlier in the week that they would be preparing for both.
Ohio State takes on Penn State at noon at Beaver Stadium. If the Buckeyes are going to beat the 7-0 Nittany Lions, it’ll take a big improvement from their Nebraska game. The quarterback uncertainty will play itself out with both likely playing and Allar getting the start.
