Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning gives honest opinion about Indiana and head coach Curt Cignetti
Head coach Dan Lanning was complimentary to Indiana in his Monday evening press conference.
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning opened his weekly press conference with a tone of respect and readiness, making it clear that his team understands the challenge ahead when the No. 3 Ducks host the No. 8 Indiana Hoosiers this Saturday at Autzen Stadium.
“Unbelievable opportunity sitting in front of us here with a top-10 matchup against a really good team,” Lanning said. “You watch these guys on tape, they do a lot of things well. I think the first thing that stands out to you is when you look at special teams and how dominant they have been in special teams and blocking kicks, just what they do. They know their player’s strengths and they play to their player’s strengths. The quarterback is playing as good as anybody. Obviously they are really well-coached on both sides of the ball. They create a lot of havoc on defense.”
Lanning’s praise for Indiana wasn’t just about their team; it was about their head coach, Curt Cignetti. “Obviously, everywhere he’s been he’s had a lot of success,” Lanning said of the Hoosiers’ head coach. “This team’s really well-coached. Their staff has been together a long time with a lot of continuity, and that speaks to a lot of guys wanting to coach with him. He’s won everywhere he’s been.”
The Ducks’ coach has made it a point all season to emphasize preparation over perception, and his remarks reflected that same mentality. While Oregon has looked dominant through the first half of the season, Lanning’s focus remains squarely on what Indiana brings to the table – a physical, balanced offense and a defense that thrives on pressure and takeaways.
“First thing that sticks out is this is a team with a clear identity. They know what they are good at and they do it really well,” Lanning said of Indiana’s offense. Much of that identity stems from quarterback Fernando Mendoza, whose command of the Hoosiers’ attack has impressed Lanning. “Their timing is really impressive. They know where guys are going to be. He’s got a great delivery. He’s able to throw the ball extremely well and he knows where his wideouts are going to be and he knows what coverage he is throwing into.”
For Lanning, Saturday represents more than just another test – it’s a chance to measure Oregon against a well-coached, complete football team that has earned its spot in the national conversation. His message to his players was simple: respect the opponent, appreciate the moment, and rise to it.
