The Indianapolis Colts prioritized keeping their own free agents this offseason and elected only to sign two notable outside free agents.

And there's one position in particular where that mindset could end up being detrimental to their 2024 season.

The potential Achilles heel for the 2024 Colts

Last season, the poor play at the FS position became a serious problem for the Colts' defense. And their win or go home Week 18 game against the Houston Texans showed precisely why. With the opening play for the Texans' offense being a deep touchdown from CJ Stroud to Nico Collins, where safety Nick Cross didn't see CB Juju Brents get beat by Collins.

The Colts need a reliable FS they can trust in coverage. And the team deploys single high-coverage formations. Their need for a veteran in that spot just seemed so obvious, but they still have yet to sign one. And there are plenty of options with multiple apparent upgrades still available at FS for the team to consider.

If the Colts do indeed go into the season with their current group at FS, I think it would be a massive mistake. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is defined as insanity. And that is exactly what the Colts would be doing with the FS position. They still have time to sign someone, but we've seen two vet safeties signed in the past week, which could be a sign of others to come. And if the Colts wait too long, they will be fully out of options and will head into Training Camp, hoping for a player to take a huge step forward to warrant them being a starter for an NFL defense.
