The Kansas City Chiefs have fourth-year DT Tershawn Wharton back at practice after a brief stay on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.
Wharton began training camp on the list as he was still recovering from the torn ACL suffered during Week 5 of the 2022 NFL season. Shortly after the injury, he was placed on injured reserve, ending his third season in Kansas City prematurely.
Ahead of Wednesday's training camp practice, several reporters noted that Wharton came down the hill at Missouri Western State University wearing his pads, helmet in hand, and set for practice. That suggests that the team has officially moved him off of the active/PUP list, which they can do at any time during training camp. The team did not need to make room on the 90-man roster to bring Wharton back as he counted against it while on the active/PUP list.
An undrafted free agent out of Missouri S&T in 2020, Wharton has appeared in 38 games for the Chiefs with two career starts. During that span, Wharton amassed 64 total tackles, five tackles for loss, five sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and an interception.
Wharton's return should be a welcomed one in Kansas City, as he'll be the second-longest tenured defensive lineman on the practice field next to Derrick Nnadi. That's only because Chris Jones remains absent from training camp amidst his contract-related holdout.
Expect that the Chiefs will ease Wharton back into action with limited work in team drills as he gets acclimated to football activities for the first time since last October. He was spotted wearing a pretty hefty brace on his left knee.

The Kansas City Chiefs best defender is not showing up to training camp while he and the team are currently in a contract dispute.
