The Kansas City Chiefs are wrapping up mandatory minicamp practice on Thursday with Andy Reid's conditioning test.
The Chiefs' head coach spoke to media members ahead of the conditioning test and offered some updates on several key players who have missed time during mandatory minicamp and OTAs due to injuries.
Reid provided updates on starting LG Joe Thuney (pectoral), rookie first-round pick WR Xavier Worthy, LB Leo Chenal, and DT Derrick Nnadi.
Joe Thuney's status for training camp still up in the air
Thuney suffered a pectoral injury during the Chiefs' divisional-round win over the Buffalo Bills last season. He's missed the entirety of OTAs and mandatory minicamp as he heals from the injury, but Reid says he continues to work hard in his rehab and recovery.
"Joe (Thuney) is working his tail off," Reid said. "He's getting better. We'll just have to see how that thing works. I'm not sure. You know, we've got to get clearance from the doctor and all of that. That whole process that goes on as we go, but he's making good progress."
The Chiefs don't yet know if Thuney will be ready to go at the onset of training camp, which means someone else could be getting a lot of repetitions at left guard come July. However, the team does expect that he'll be ready to go for the Week 1 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens, assuming he suffers no setbacks.
"He'll be one of those guys that is kind of right on the border, whether he can go or not go, with the healing part of it," Reid said. "Yes, for the regular season, he should be OK unless there is a setback somehow."
Chiefs first-round pick Xavier Worthy is expected to be ready for training camp
There has been some fan anxiety surrounding first-round pick Xavier Worthy after he missed all but 1.5 practices during OTAs and mandatory minicamp. Andy Reid's demeanor when asked about Worthy's injury on Thursday remained unconcerned.
Reid says the rookie is making progress and should be ready to go when the team gets to St. Joseph, Missouri in July.
"Yeah, he should be able to," Reid said. "He'll continue to get treatment here. He's getting better. He'll get treatment and we'll just see how he rehabs through that."
How Worthy manages things during the break from now to training camp could prove vital in his ability to get back on the practice field with his teammates in St. Joe.
Leo Chenal and Derrick Nnadi both making progress
Two defenders who haven't been participating in practice are LB Leo Chenal and DT Derrick Nnadi. Chenal is dealing with a back injury, while Nnadi is dealing with a triceps/elbow injury. Reid seems to think both players are making progress, with Chenal having the edge over Nnadi in his recovery.
"Yeah, they're both doing good," Reid said. "Range of motion for (Derrick) Nnadi. Then, Leo (Chenal) is close. He's doing a nice job."
It's reasonable to expect Chenal will be back to start training camp, but Nnadi might need a little more time.
