On Thursday, the Kansas City Chiefs will likely be without defensive star Chris Jones when the 2023 NFL season kicks off against the Detroit Lions. That could bring some problems.
With Jones on the field, the Chiefs have a top-three pass rush. They finished second in sacks last year behind the near record-breaking Philadelphia Eagles. The defense with Chris Jones can be top-10 worthy.
Without Jones, they could be very below average.
The defense has great areas. The secondary is fine. It could be really good. The linebacker unit is really good, as they have two underrated guys, Willie Gay, and Drue Tranquill, and one of the best linebackers in the league, Nick Bolton. The edge rushers are fine and have the potential to be good.
But the defensive tackle position, outside of Chris Jones and Charles Omenihu, who will not play Thursday, is not great. That's where the potential issue is.
The Chiefs could get the all ran over them all night, and the pass rush, or pressure, not be there too.
But the Chiefs aren't worried about it. At least, that's what they are telling us.
"We will be okay. We have good players. We will be alright," Andy Reid said when he addressed the media on Sunday.
The Lions will run the ball a lot, and knowing the Chiefs don't have their best defensive player, one of the best in the league, they will do it even more. The Lions also have one of the best offensive lines in the league.
That will make it much harder to put pressure on the quarterback/pocket and stop the run between the tackles.
Reid mentioned the Chiefs have good players, and they do. Tershawn Wharton, Derrick Nnadi, Keondre Coburn, and Neil Farrell will all be shot at defending a lethal Lions offense.
