Update: The Chiefs' fifth-round compensatory pick is now pick No. 173 due to an error in the original calculation by the NFL Management Council.

The NFL has officially announced compensatory draft pick selections for the 2024 NFL draft in April. Brett Veach did a good job navigating last year's free agency period once again, ensuring that the Chiefs would get something in return for their free agents lost.

The Kansas City Chiefs will officially receive an extra fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft, bringing their total up to seven projected picks. They'll now have Round 5, Pick 172 in addition to their prior allotment of picks.

Explaining the Chiefs' compensatory pick in 2024

The assignment of compensatory draft picks in the NFL is pretty simple. If you lose more compensatory free agents than you gain in a given offseason, you qualify for compensation in the following year's draft.

Kansas City lost six qualifying compensatory free agents in 2023: Orlando Brown Jr. to the Bengals ($16M), Andrew Wylie to the Commanders ($8M), JuJu Smith-Schuster to the Patriots ($8.5M), Juan Thornhill to the Browns ($7M), Mecole Hardman to the Jets ($4.5M) and Khalen Saunders to the Saints ($4.1M). They all signed qualifying contracts ahead of the May 2 deadline.

The Chiefs also gained four qualifying compensatory free agents: Jawaan Taylor from the Jags ($20M), Charles Omenihu from the 49ers ($8M), Drue Tranquill from the Chargers ($3M), and Mike Edwards from the Bucs ($3M).

Technically, the Chiefs should have received two compensatory pick selections in 2024, but the trade to acquire Hardman from the Jets at midseason threw a wrench into that. The trade looked like it was going to be a bust until the final play of Super Bowl LVIII turned it into genius.

They'll gain just a single fifth-round compensatory pick, but I think you'd trade that for a Super Bowl victory every single time. According to Over The Cap's Nick Korte, the pick received is specifically for Wylie's contract, so you can thank Washington for the extra draft capital.
