The Kansas City Chiefs are set to square off with the Cleveland Browns in Week 3 of the 2023 NFL preseason.

It's the last opportunity for players to make an impression before the team's 53-man roster cuts. They'll be giving it their best shot in front of the home crowd, which always is a big boost of confidence. It'll be especially exciting as this is the team's first in-game appearance in front of the Chiefs Kingdom since winning Super Bowl LVII.

How much do the starters play?

Andy Reid has made it clear that the starters might play "a little" in preseason Week 3. That includes QB Patrick Mahomes, who has already played over 20 snaps during the course of the preseason. It also might include Isiah Pacheco and Tershawn Wharton, who are healthy following some maintenance and rest due to injuries.
The Browns also intend to play their starters for around two dozen snaps or so.

QB2 battle continues:

Shane Buechele and Blaine Gabbert are "real close" according to Chiefs HC Andy Reid. He's not talking about the backup quarterbacks being friendly either. These two are in a heated battle for the No. 2 QB job in Kansas City. Their performance in this game could be a big difference-maker.

5 players to keep an eye on:

  • CB Ekow Boye-Doe: This undrafted rookie has been neck-and-neck with Kahlef Hailassie. With an injury to Nic Jones and L'Jarius Sneed still on ice, there are opportunities for a cornerback to break through. Boye-Doe having a big game on Saturday could make all of the difference.

  • WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette: The team's receiving leader in Preseason Week 2, Smith-Marsette is trying to make the wide receiver roster battle even more difficult for Kansas City. A big performance on special teams as a punt returner could help him land on the 53-man roster.

  • LB Cam Jones: He's seen some good plays on defense and special teams, but he still seems to be behind guys like Jack Cochrane on the depth chart. Will he perform well enough to make a push for the 53-man roster?

  • RT Lucas Niang: The backup offensive tackle battle in Kansas City is quite fierce. Niang has already been subject to trade/roster cut speculation, so he'll need to put on a big performance if he's looking to keep things close with Prince Tega Wanogho and rookie Wanya Morris.

  • DT Keondre Coburn: Coburn played a lot of snaps with the first-team defense in preseason Week 2, rotating in with DT Matt Dickerson. I'm curious to see if he'll continue to get more snaps with the starters or if DT Danny Shelton will work in at all.
