The Kansas City Chiefs got Chris Jones to end his holdout and return to the team by crafting a new one-year deal for the star defensive tackle.
The $19.5M base salary of Jones' original deal stays completely the same in this reworked contract, so they didn't exactly rip up the old deal. Brett Veach and his team simply tacked on some new incentives. Jones can earn the following incentives in 2023, according to NBC Sports:
- $1M for 35 percent playing time.
- An additional $1M for 50 percent playing time.
- $1.25M for 10 sacks.
- An additional $500K for 15 sacks.
- $1M if he's named First-Team All-Pro and appears in the Super Bowl
- $2M for Defensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl win.
In total, Jones can earn up to $25M and recoup the fines that he lost during his holdout.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the newly reworked contract does not include a clause that would prevent the Chiefs from using the franchise tag on Jones in 2024. Jones would earn 120% of this year's salary on the franchise tag in 2024, meaning his tag number would exceed $30 million next season.
The big question that remains for Kansas City is the question of salary cap space. Many are speculating that the team has either restructured other contracts or added a void year to Jones' contract in order to spread out his 2023 cap hit.
