The Kansas City Chiefs have an undrafted free agent rookie that is drawing comparisons to a former fan favorite by special teams coordinator Dave Toub.
Coming into 2023, some things will be different when it comes to special teams. Some of the guys we saw in the return game last year have much bigger roles on offense or defense in 2023, so they may not be back returning kicks or punts as they did a season ago.
Toub was asked recently if we could see some changes there because of that, and while he let us know one guy who is doing well, he pulled out a comparison I'm sure fans will love.
"Oh yeah, yeah, I do. I do anticipate that," Toub told the media on Thursday. "You know some guys that are doing really well right now you probably want to know [about]. [Deneric] Prince is looking good. He reminds me so much, you guys remember Knile Davis? He reminds me of Knile, even has the same number.
"Didn't do it in college but you know he's showing traits right now that so much he reminds me so much of Knile. But it's kind of scary. You know, Knile was pretty good for us. And you know, as he went on, obviously, the touchdowns and you know, so I see him in that role."
The Chiefs struggled in certain areas on special teams last year, when historically Toub has been a great coordinator. Last year they dealt with injuries that resulted in some missed field goals. But they also had some fumbles and muffed punts too.
I think it is good to keep it fresh when it comes to a returner each year, and Prince is an undrafted free agent, so he's going to play his butt off on special teams to try and work his way up on the offensive depth chart.
The Knile Davis comparison is great because if you watched the Chiefs then, you know how much of a fan favorite he was. He was with the Chiefs from 2013-2016, where he scored two touchdowns on a kick return during that time.
Davis was drafted by the Chiefs in the third round out of the University of Arkansas. In 2015, the Chiefs used him as a running back a bit as he finished with over 400 rushing yards. Being undrafted is tough, but for a guy who wasn't known by a lot of people, being compared to Davis is really cool.
