The Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator just named the guys he is most excited about in 2023.
The Chiefs struggled on special teams at times last year, but as the season went on, they gradually fixed the biggest issues they were having – like field goals, muffed punts, and just coverage issues in general.
Now, with a new set of guys coming on this season, and the main group of guys from last season, the Chiefs are looking to have a better special teams unit right out of the gates. Well, that's what Dave Toub said at least, predicting the unit would be better right away.
Shortly after that, he explained all of the guys he is excited to see this year, including some guys that saw some action last season.
"I'm excited about the linebacker, I talked about [Deneric] Prince," Toub said to the media. "I'm excited about the young linebackers, [Isaiah] Moore, and [Cam] Jones, the two free-agent kids that we have. I like our kids that we drafted, [Chamarri] Connor and [Nic] Jones. Yeah, both of those guys are going to help us right off the bat. You know, and then the D lineman, defensive end, possibly, you know, some roleplay but not so much as a four-phase guy.
"But I'm excited about the young players. But really, it's those last years young players that are getting better that we're going to you know, guys like [Jack] Cochran and Nazeeh [Johnson], you know, he towards the end of the year Nazeeh Johnson as a gunner, he was playing better than anybody in the league. So I'm excited about him who probably are number one gunner coming in the next year."
Hearing Toub say that about two undrafted guys don't guarantee them a spot on the roster, but I would think it certainly helps us understand where they are at and how they feel about the two players.
The Chiefs are great at finding unknown talent and developing it into something. If those two can turn into something great, that would be amazing. There is nothing wrong with being a special teams guy either. A lot of guys that start from nothing have to start somewhere, and no one values that like the Chiefs.
You don't hear about special teams a ton, so to hear Toub talk about what he likes so far is good.
