The Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins are going to be playing in subzero temperatures on Saturday night.
One Chiefs player sought out some information from a unique source in terms of handling those types of conditions. According to NFL Network's James Palmer, Chiefs S Justin Reid reached out to some friends who play in the Canadian Football League (CFL).
These friends often have to deal with playing in subzero temperatures during the CFL season in Canada. For instance, the coldest game in CFL history came in 1991 between the Toronto Argonauts and the Calgary Stampeders. At kickoff, the temperature was -16°C with a wind chill of -35°C.
So what exactly did Reid learn from his friends up north?
- Keep your core temperature up by moving constantly.
- Warm your extremities (hands/feet) with the heaters on the sideline.
- Don't wear too many layers.
It doesn't exactly sound like Reid will be listening to that last part.
"I'm going to layer up," Reid told reporters on Thursday. "I'm not trying to win the swag competition on having my arms out or anything like that. I'm wearing layers. I'm going to be prepared for the cold. I can't speak for everybody, but that's what I'm going to do."
As far as layering gloves is concerned, Reid says his hands will have to "thug it out." He also confirmed that he'll wear sleeves for the game and predicted that CB Josh Williams might go sleeveless on the defensive side of the ball.
There is also the mental aspect of the cold. Palmer says that CFL players told Reid the team that complains the most often finds themselves on the losing side.
