Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is a big reason why free agents come to Kansas City.
He is known as a "players coach" who treats his guys with respect and lets their personalities shine. With the Chiefs recent Super Bowl success over the last five years, Reid has used that to his advantage while recruiting free agents to come to K.C. Linebacker Drue Tranquill took to Twitter to share an exchange between himself and Reid via text message during the offseason, in which Reid told Tranquill to "see Red and think Super Bowls."
This isn't the first we've seen Reid trying to lure a free agent to K.C. by flaunting the team's championship success. A couple of years ago, former Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster said that Reid was constantly messaging him pictures of the Lombardi Trophy.
Tranquill reflected on his exchange with Reid when reporters asked him what his experience being a Chiefs has been like this season.
“It’s been a whirlwind," Tranquill said. "You dream of this as a kid, you want to play in this game. This is the pinnacle of the football world, the biggest game in the biggest league in the world. To look back on that text with (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid, it’s something to laugh about but it’s crazy. It’s been a long 10 months since that moment. We’ve put a lot of hard work in since that moment, so super we’re excited for this opportunity.”
Tranquill was one of the best free agent signings for K.C. this past offseason, recording 79 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles during the regular season. He was also outstanding in pass coverage, something the Chiefs have sorely missed within their linebacker corps over the last several years.
K.C. would be wise to re-sign the 28-year-old Tranquill, who is only on a one-year deal. With Wille Gay Jr. also slated to hit free agency, linebacker is becoming an underrated need for the defense in 2024. There's no doubt his experience this season will be all the convincing he needs to re-sign if he receives a fair offer.
As for Coach Reid, it should be entertaining to see who he tries to lure in next year, especially if the Chiefs bring home another Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LVIII.
