The Kansas City Chiefs have made a move!

As we told you yesterday, Chiefs GM Brett Veach loves to make trades this time of the year, and his first move is a trade. According to numerous reports, Kansas City is sending preseason star Ihmir Smith-Marsette to the Carolina Panthers in a swap involving a conditional seventh-round draft pick in the 2025 NFL draft (two years from now).

This was simply a numbers game for the Chiefs, especially with reports surfacing that Kadarius Toney could be ready to play in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.

Smith-Marsette had a big preseason in Kansas City this year. Among wide receivers who have played in all three games during the 2023 NFL preseason, Smith-Marsette was the highest graded at PFF with a 91.1 offensive grade. He finished the preseason with 9 receptions on 10 targets for 195 receiving yards & 2 TDs. He tied for the most receiving touchdowns among AFC receivers in the preseason.

Smith-Marsette first joined the Chiefs as a member of the practice squad last season. The 24-year-old is a former 2021 fifth-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings and also spent time with the Chicago Bears last season.

This move will clear just under $1 million in cap space for Kansas City.
