The Kansas City Chiefs have made a surprise decision ahead of their travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs have designated RB Jerick McKinnon to return from injured reserve. This means that McKinnon's 21-day practice window is now open and that he has a chance to play in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs would need to make a corresponding roster move and activate him to the 53-man roster on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the absolute latest.
Shortly after McKinnon was placed on injured reserve, Andy Reid told reporters the following about McKinnon's status and potential return: “We’ll see on that," He said. "We’ll have to, literally – we’ll have to see how that goes.”
McKinnon reportedly suffered a groin injury and a fractured pelvis and had surgery to repair the injuries in early January. I'm told that McKinnon participated in the team's practice session on Saturday in some capacity.
This move doesn't necessarily signal that McKinnon will be able to return in time to play in the Super Bowl, but it at least gives him a chance.
McKinnon has been huge during the postseason for Kansas City in each of the past few years. He was a massive threat in the receiving game at the end of last year, plus the team's best pass protector in the backfield.
McKinnon has just 20 attempts for 60 rushing yards and a rushing score this season. His value, however, is in the passing game as a blocker and a receiver. The veteran has added 25 receptions for 192 receiving yards and four touchdowns on the year.
