The Kansas City Chiefs starting receiver is hurt, but it hurts the Chiefs in multiple ways.

We heard about Kadarius Toney leaving practice early on Sunday because of a tweaked knee. On Tuesday, Andy Reid gave everyone an update on Toney's situation.

"As far as injuries go, Kadarius had surgery on his knee this morning for cartilage, and it should be relatively quick as we go here," Reid said to the media. "He wanted to get that thing taken care of."

Toney dealt with a hamstring issue when he was traded to Kansas City from the New York Giants.

"Listen, I look at it the other [way], and I go, 'I'm glad they caught it and that it happened this early where he can get himself back, and we've got a lot of time still left,'" Reid continued. "He's a smart kid, so he picks this stuff up fairly easily. I don't think he's going to have a tough time getting back in. It's just getting back into football shape."

Toney had huge expectations coming into this year, and while no, his season isn't over, this is a setback. And man does it hurt not only him but the Chiefs too, and it hurts the Chiefs in a multitude of ways.

Chiefs hurt by Toney news in a few different ways

Toney is one of Mahomes' best weapons

KT is a weapon, and those seem hard to come by these days for the Chiefs. There is no more Tyreek Hill to bail you out down the field when your other receivers get hurt. Sure, there is still Travis Kelce, but because of how defenses guard him, you can't rely on him 24/7, which is why this year was so important for Toney.

The Chiefs are not only losing a starter, but they are losing a weapon. They are losing a guy who is fast, like elite fast, and has the change of direction, not many people have.

Mahomes doesn't have a definite wide receiver anymore like he once did. But this year, KT was supposed to be that for Mahomes. He was supposed to be the Chiefs' wide receiver one. When you ask Matt Nagy about him, this is what he says:

"Well, I think we all see what he can do when a football is in his hands," Nagy told reporters. "And again, the same type of deal. He comes over halfway through the season. It's a whole new offense; he's got to learn the ins and outs. And, so you have that point. And he was able to do that. And it's exciting now for us to be able to take that to year two and build that relationship with Pat. But he's super talented with football on his hands. And he's, he's been that way his entire life and his football career."

Hopefully, KT can get back in time because that's another way he is hurting the team.

Toney is going to miss a lot

KT will miss a ton of practice and possibly every preseason game. For all we know, he could miss Week 1. But missing all of these offseason activities is bad because this is the time to get back in shape, build chemistry, and learn the playbook some more.

That's crucial, and the fact he is already somewhat behind because he is still new makes it even worse. You can study the playbook all you want, but an offense as complicated as Andy Reid's is one where you need to do it to learn it.

Less skill/depth at WR and PR

This injury takes away some of the incredible depth at the wide receiver position. While, yeah, it is good that now Justyn Ross gets some snaps with the first team, now the depth isn't as good. The depth is good because Justyn Ross is a backup.

Not only that but the punt return gets hurt too. Toney is supposed to be the main guy on the punt return, just like he did last year.

This injury hurts the Chiefs quite a bit. But now, the only thing we can hope for is a speedy recovery.
