For the past three playoff games for the Kansas City Chiefs, the offense has been as close to a well-oiled machine as it has been all season.

Suddenly, this offense has found themselves reverting to the old habits that had many fans thinking a Super Bowl berth was impossible. Penalties, turnovers, and dropped passes marred the offensive success for the better part of the 2023 NFL regular season. Well, they certainly marred the first half of Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers.

The first four offensive drives told the tale.

Protection has been a huge issue for the offensive line right now. Mahomes has been sacked twice by the 49ers and hasn't been able to get comfortable in the pocket. One each of the three punts, the Chiefs have been behind the sticks, facing third-and-long distances to gain.

Isiah Pacheco's second-quarter fumble killed all of the momentum of a 52-yard reception from Mecole Hardman. The Chiefs also had five first-half penalties for 50 yards. A dropped pass from Justin Watson on the team's scoring drive in the second half possibly prevented the team from turning three points into seven.

The offense simply hasn't been as composed as they were during their recent run of postseason success. They're currently down, but not out. Mahomes, of course, has trailed by double digits in all four Super Bowls that he's played in, so he's no stranger to this situation.

The Chiefs will get the ball on offense to start the second half.
