Last season, the Kanas City Chiefs found a way to win the Super Bowl, all while having a whole new group of wide receivers. Yet, they still weren't really a team that threw the ball as deep as they used to and certainly didn't have the flashy plays they did with Tyreek Hill on the team.

This year is even worse than the last season, well, kind of. The receiver issue and offense as a whole are much worse, and it's undeniably the big factor that is holding this team back. If they do end up getting eliminated from the playoffs, the offense will likely be the reason, as the defense has shown almost no flaws this season

However, it would appear that maybe, just maybe, the Chiefs have found something in the deep ball, just like they used to have. It's not quite as explosive, but we saw something against the Cincinnati Bengals that we haven't seen really all year or even last year, and it felt great.

According to Next Gen Stats, Mahomes was 2/3 on deep ball passes (20+ air yards) against the Bengals in their Week 17 win. But the stats go a bit deeper than that. Here is what Next Gen Stats said about Mahomes' best game throwing the deep ball since 2021 when he was throwing to now Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill.

Patrick Mahomes' 67-yard completion to Rashee Rice is Rice's first deep reception of his career (20+ air yards). Mahomes has thrown for 108 yards on deep passes today (2 for 3), his first game over 100 yards since Tyreek Hill left the team.

The deep ball to Rashee Rice felt amazing, whether you are a media or a fan, mainly because of all the struggles this wide receiver group has had this year, along with the general issues the offense has had.

The Chiefs' offense still had some issues in Week 17, especially in the red zone, but they connected on two deep balls, and the third one was just a bad misplaced ball by Patrick Mahomes to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. The Chiefs offense could really use this and build off of it for the playoffs.
