The Kansas City Chiefs' star quarterback is gearing up for his very own "Flu Game" in the team's Week 8 tilt against the Denver Broncos.
The team announced on Sunday morning that star QB Patrick Mahomes would be added to the injury report with an illness. The good news is that he doesn't carry a game status designation, so he's not currently at any risk of missing the game. However, the fact that he was added to the injury report means the illness is significant enough that it could impact his performance and play.
According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, Mahomes is dealing with flu-like symptoms. He was feeling sick on Saturday and has been receiving IVs each of the past two days. She says he does not feel great, but he will play on Sunday afternoon. Others report that Mahomes had a fever on Saturday night, but that his condition has improved on Sunday morning.
Keep in mind that the weather also could play a factor here. It's expected to be within the range of 6-29 degrees at kickoff with wind and snow flurries. That certainly won't help if Mahomes is dealing with any respiratory symptoms.
Another thing to consider surrounding Mahomes' placement on the injury report is that the NFL is cracking down on how teams handle the injury report. The Atlanta Falcons did not report that RB Bijan Robinson had an illness ahead of Week 7's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The league told NBC Sports that they'd be following up with the Falcons on their failure to disclose his illness. I'm told the Chiefs were cognizant of that fact in their decision to add Mahomes to the report.
