The majority of the Kansas City Chiefs' 90-man offseason roster will suit up on Sunday for their first preseason game of the year against the New Orleans Saints. Five players, however, have already been ruled out of the game by Andy Reid.
First comes the most obvious of absences. Each of CB L'Jarius Sneed (knee), WR Kadarius Toney (knee), and TE Jody Fortson (shoulder) will all sit out of the game on Sunday. Those three players remain absent from training camp practices with their respective injuries, so it's no surprise that they'll continue to sit out during what is ultimately a meaningless game as far as the regular season standings are concerned.
Next, both DT Tershawn Wharton and RB Isiah Pacheco will sit out of the game.
Wharton returned from the active/PUP list and is ramping up in his recovery from a 2022 ACL injury. He was not at training camp practice on Friday.
Pacheco has been recovering from offseason surgery on his shoulder. He's not yet been cleared for contact. He might not be cleared at all during the course of the preseason, but stated he's ready to go as soon as he's been cleared by the medical and training staff.
Chris Jones is not expected to play as his holdout persists, but Reid did not expressly rule him out of the game.
Now, you might find yourself saying, "Wait, all of these guys are starters. They wouldn't have been playing anyways, right?"
Wrong.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid has been consistent in his strategy of getting the starters some playing time during the preseason. Most get somewhere between a series and a quarter of playtime, depending on how they perform on the field.
“I’ve got it scheduled by quarterback,” Reid told reporters on Friday. “The ones will take the first quarter, twos the second quarter, threes the third quarter, fours the last quarter."
The only spot that might be a bit different is special teams, where Reid says Dave Toub will be juggling a lot of different bodies.
