Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris Jones wasn't kidding when he announced to the world at the Super Bowl LVIII rally that he intended to stay with the team.
After an extended standoff over a long-term deal, the Chiefs and the Katz Brothers have finally agreed to a contract that could keep Jones in Kansas City. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Jones has signed an extension that will make him among the highest-paid DTs in NFL history. It'll be a 5-year deal with the Chiefs with up to $95M in guaranteed money, ranking fourth in the league among defensive players.
Jones hinted this contract was coming on social media on Thursday.
This is the second long-term extension that Jones has signed during his NFL career. Jones previously signed a four-year extension worth $80M back in July 2020. He agreed to an incentive-laden reworked contract in the final year of that deal after holding out for Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season. Now he'll receive the highest-paid average salary by a DT in NFL history with close to $32M per year.
A former second-round draft pick out of Mississippi State in 2016, Jones has put together a resume that will surely see him enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day. With 123 games played, Jones has recorded a staggering 273 combined tackles, 75.5 sacks, 37 passes batted, 12 forced fumbles, three fumbles recoveries, and two interceptions. He's won three Super Bowl titles with five career All-Pro selections and five consecutive Pro Bowl nods dating back to 2019. Jones holds the NFL record for the most consecutive games with a sack (11), which he set during the 2022 NFL season.
Now, he'll get to add to that record of success with the team and the teammates that helped him attain it in the first place.
