The Kansas City Chiefs are dealing with the typical attrition during the dog days of training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.
After just four players were absent from practice with injuries on Wednesday, the latest training camp practice saw the number of players missing nearly double in size. Players such as WR Kadarius Toney (knee), CB L'Jarius Sneed (knee), DE Michael Danna (calf), and TE Jody Fortson (shoulder) remained absent from practice on Thursday.
The most notable absence is the team's top defensive free agent addition in versatile DL Charles Omenihu, who has been working as both edge rusher and on the inside of the defensive line during training camp. According to Senior Team Reporter Matt McMullen, Omenihu was dealing with calf spasms. He was spotted working in the training tent on the sideline during practice.
With both Omenihu and Danna sidelined, third-year DEs Joshua Kaindoh and Malik Herring saw increased repetitions with the first-team defense. DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah continued to work with the second-team defense.
Another free agent defender, LB Drue Tranquill, was also absent from practice on Thursday. This is the second time he's missed practice during training camp. The 27-year-old injured his neck on Friday and missed practice on Saturday before returning to the field on both Monday and Wednesday (Tuesday was an off day). It's unclear if this absence is injury-related or if he was excused for other reasons, but Tranquill told reporters on Monday that he was good.
Finally, undrafted free agent CB Reese Taylor missed out on practice with a hamstring injury. The rookie had made some nice plays for the second-team and third-team defenses in recent weeks.
All of the injuries are worth monitoring as the first preseason game of the year against the New Orleans Saints on Aug. 13 is fast approaching.
