Per A to Z Sports' Doug Kyed, DeAndre Hopkins is expected to finalize his contract with the Tennessee Titans over the next few days.
And, as a quick reminder: New York Jets defensive tackle signed a four-year, $96 million contract on Thursday.
Therefore, it's likely Chris Jones and the Kansas City Chiefs will come to some kind of agreement on the four-time Pro Bowler's own contract situation in the near future.
Or does it?
The odds are that yes, it will. It was initially reported a few weeks ago that Williams' deal was being viewed as the "outline", so to speak, for Jones' potential contract extension. As mentioned earlier, that shoe dropped on Thursday, leaving both sides with concrete framework to use in talks.
It was also pretty well-known that the Chiefs had significant interest in Hopkins, but the Jones shoe had to drop before the team could do anything with DHop. Right now, the Chiefs are dead last in the NFL with just a little more than $532k in cap space. Extending Jones can create the room needed to sign Hopkins since he has a $19.5 million base salary in 2023.
Now that Hopkins is out of the way, the Chiefs and Jones can focus on each other. The parameters are all set and the groundwork has been laid. And, the main distraction that is Hopkins is now off the table, unless something crazy happens with the Titans – which isn't likely to happen, at all.
As with all things, only time will tell us what truly happens. But, it's hard to fathom the thought of the Chiefs-Jones saga lasting much longer.
