It was reported over the weekend that Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu plans to test the free-agent market.

That means that Mathieu won't be signing an extension before the new league year begins next week (unless he has a sudden change of heart).

This isn't good news for Chiefs fans who want to see the Honey Badger back in Kansas City next season.

Mathieu is hitting the open market so he can drive up his value. It's a wise move on his part if he's trying to maximize his earnings (and I'm sure that's the goal). The best-case scenario for the Chiefs bringing Mathieu back was re-signing him before he hit free agency. But now that they'll be bidding against other teams for his services, it seems much more plausible that Mathieu could play elsewhere in 2022.

In fact, Mathieu might already have a destination in mind.

A New Orleans Saints Instagram account posted a "rumor" that Mathieu has been linked to signing with the Saints this offseason.

Mathieu commented on the post with a couple of "fire" emojis — typically a seal of approval from a commenter.

This is a move that would make a lot of sense. The Saints could use another safety — and Mathieu is one of the best available.

Plus, and this is the most important detail, Mathieu is a New Orleans native. I'm sure the idea of playing in his hometown is extremely enticing — especially considering how loyal he's remained to LSU. Signing with the Saints would allow Mathieu to be closer to Baton Rouge.

We'll see how this all plays out over the next 7 to 10 days. But I think Chiefs fans better start coming to terms with the idea of a Mathieu-less defense in Kansas City in 2022.
