Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu will be a free agent when the 2021 league year officially ends.
Mathieu, who turns 30 in May, is coming off his second straight Pro-Bowl appearance. He led the Chiefs in interceptions with three (including one returned for a touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens in week two) and he was tied for third on the team in tackles with 76.
On Thursday, Mathieu talked to the NFL Network about his upcoming free agency and he made it clear he wants to stay in Kansas City.
"The hope and the dream is to continue to be a Kansas City Chief," said Mathieu. "We created so much history the last couple years."
"I want to be in Kansas City and I think everybody knows that," added Mathieu.
Just because the former LSU star wants to be in Kansas City doesn't necessarily mean that's what's going to happen.
This is going to largely depend on what kind of contract Mathieu is looking for. Is he looking to be paid like a top safety? If so, it depends on how the Chiefs view him.
Pro Football Focus is projecting that Mathieu will earn a three-year deal worth $16.25 million per year. That would place the Honey Badger among the top five highest-paid safeties in the NFL (based on annual average value).
Mathieu will likely get paid like a top-five safety. But will be Kansas City who pays him?
That's one of the big questions surrounding the franchise this offseason.
