Earlier this offseason, Chiefs GM Brett Veach said that signing Chris Jones to a new contract was "on the list of things to do." However, we are now in June, and Jones still has not signed an extension.

As a result, Jones has skipped the entirety of Chiefs minicamp, and his training camp status is up in the air. The good news is that Andy Reid does not seem concerned:

"Chris wasn't here — kind of like last year, same type of deal — That's his choice. So, he chose not to be here. But I'm sure he'll be at training camp."

The reason for the holdout is apparent, Jones wants a contract extension, and the team is yet to give it to him. Jones is not hiding his intentions and recently went on social media to once again show that he wants to get paid.

Jones is entering the final year of a four-year, $80 million extension signed in 2020 and is set to make $19.5 million in base salary. However, Jones is looking for security beyond this season, as he is set to become a free agent next offseason.

Jones turns 29 in July and is trying to cash in on another big contract while still in his prime. Reid seems very relaxed about the whole situation and just had one message to tell Jones: "Make sure you're in shape."

Jones is coming off an incredible season, where he recorded a career-high 15.5 sacks for the Super Bowl champions. Jones has made the All-Pro team in three consecutive seasons and is looking to make it four in a row in 2023.

Jones is most likely seeking a raise in average annual pay that aligns with some of the other top defensive tackles in the league. Rams' Aaron Donald ($31.7M) and Titans' Jeffery Simmons ($23.5M) currently sit atop the interior defensive line market.
