The Kansas City Chiefs are getting prepared to face the Denver Broncos on "Thursday Night Football" in Week 6 of the 2023 NFL season.
They'll have to manage as best they can with a short week to prepare, but they'll get a miniature bye week and a much-needed reinforcement on the defensive side of the ball directly following Thursday's game. Charles Omenihu will soon complete his six-game suspension, at which time he'll be permitted to rejoin the team in full capacity.
Omenihu was signed in free agency last March, boasting inside-outside versatility on the defensive line. What exactly will his return look like? Find all the details below:
When can Omenihu return from suspension?
Omenihu's suspension can be lifted by the commissioner as early as Friday, Oct. 13, which is the day following the Chiefs' Week 6 game against the Broncos. It will happen officially at 5:00 p.m. ET when the NFL processes the daily transaction report. At this juncture, Omenihu will be permitted to rejoin the team for meetings, walkthroughs, practices, and so on. There will no longer be any restrictions on what he's allowed to participate in and do. He can begin playing as early as the team's Week 7 game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Oct. 22. That decision, however, will ultimately be up to the coaching staff. How he looks in practice after having not participated since the preseason will be a key factor in whether and how much he'll play in Week 7.
What roster moves with the Chiefs need to make?
The team won't immediately need to make a roster move when Omenihu is removed from the reserve/suspended list. They'll be granted a temporary roster exemption for Omenihu, which will give them some time to determine their roster move. In order to activate Omenihu to the 53-man roster for Week 7 against the Chargers, Brett Veach will need to make some sort of a roster move to clear space for Omenihu. If the team suffers an injury in Week 6, that roster move could be placing a player on injured reserve. Otherwise, look for the team to potentially waive DT Matt Dickerson from the 53-man roster.
