The Kansas City Chiefs dynasty has officially arrived.
For the third time in five years, the Chiefs are Super Bowl champions with an epic overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. They became the first Super Bowl team with back-to-back victories since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in 2003-2004.
Some of the darkest times for their franchise were the moments without a star quarterback leading the way, so it's only fitting that Patrick Mahomes led a stunning game-winning drive in overtime.
"Really, just the whole game was a microcosm of our whole season," Mahomes said following the game.
The offense struggled early on with penalties, turnovers, and miscues, but the defense kept them in the game, Harrison Butker kicked some butt and when push came to shove, the offense showed up just enough.
When the 49ers took a 22-19 lead in overtime, it was a legacy-defining drive for Mahomes and the rest of the team. Sure enough, he was able to rise to the challenge with physical and mental toughness. They launched a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive that propelled the team into rarified air in the NFL history books.
"The Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs, just know that," he quipped
Underdogs no more, the Chiefs are champions once again with plenty of chapters left to write.
