Reid already threw his shade at The Athletic back in July, and now the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes is taking his turn with Pro Football Focus. No outlet is safe, apparently.

It all started when The Athletic talked to some NFL executives and coordinators. They were asked about Mahomes, and this was their response.

“We love Mahomes because of his unorthodox throws, not because of his natural pocket presence. And when that disappears, that is when they lose games. I don’t think that is a one. I think that is a two. Nothing against the guy. I love the kid. But take his first read away and what does he do? He runs, he scrambles and he plays streetball.”

This was Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s’ response.

“I know you guys look at PFF [Pro Football Focus]… so go look and see how many times he hits his second receiver”

Then, on Thursday after the game, Mahomes took his own shot at PFF.

“I mean you never know. You saw the ball hit the ground, you saw a little bit of movement, but they have been a little more lenient on letting the ball move and if the guy gets his hands underneath it. You hope it’s called and overturned, obviously. On the play, they got me.

“All game they were playing one coverage and out of nowhere they threw me with a shell coverage… I don’t throw it just straight to guys, most times. But I got lucky enough that it bounced around, hit the ground, and I was able to get another chance at it. I’m sure PFF will have me a low grade for that but I’ll keep it rolling.”

Mahomes was graded by PFF last week, in a grade that didn’t make much sense. He was easily the best quarterback in Week 1, but PFF didn’t seem to think so.

They ranked him the 8th best quarterback with a 71.5 rating behind these guys: Josh Allen – 91.5, Kirk Cousins – 85.1, Ryan Tannehill – 81.1, Justin Herbert – 79.8, Jameis Winston – 79.6, Lamar Jackson – 76.8, and Jalen Hurts – 76.8.

After throwing 30/39, 300 passing yards, and five touchdowns, all numbers those guys didn’t have, Mahomes is the eighth best.

So, the blow to PFF was only right, by my accounts.
